On 12th May, Sarah Mullally who used to be our Rector at St Nicholas, was installed as the 133rd and first female Bishop of london, at St Pauls Cathedral. Many of her past parishoners managed to attend the service and even the reception afterwards, hosted by the Lord Mayor and the city of London, in the Guildhall. The picture above and some in the Gallery were taken by members of St Nicholas congregation.
In her sermon, she preached on the theme of “being subversive for Christ” – noting that 105 years ago this week, suffragettes placed a bomb underneath the same seat upon which she had been enthroned as Bishop of London. She also spoke of the challenges facing London, particularly escalating knife crime, and referenced historical sexual abuse within the Church.
Bishop Mullally called for a culture that “challenges deference and the abuse of power” and for victims of abuse to be listened to.
