Why get married in Church?

You can get married pretty much anywhere these days, from the local registry office to a beach in the Bahamas.  However many will feel that there is something about a church that makes it a special place to get married in. It could be because it’s a place of prayer, where people have worshipped God, often for centuries. It could be because there’s something in those ancient words “…for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part…” that nothing else can touch. It could be because of the centuries of wisdom the Church has built up about the meaning of marriage. It could be that, for whatever reason, your wedding won’t feel right unless it has been blessed by God in a Church.

There are all sorts of reasons for getting married in Church. We would love to talk with you about them.

Why get married at St Nicholas Church?

We love marrying people at St Nicholas Church. The building itself is astonishingly beautiful. We do everything that we can to make this YOUR special day and to make sure that the service reflects your personalities.  While it’s a great occasion of joy, it’s also something to be taken seriously, and most couples work with us on preparations, not just for the wedding but the years of marriage that lie ahead. We expect those getting married at St Nicholas Church to attend our preparation sessions which take place throughout the year. Everyone who has attended the sessions has said how helpful and interesting they have been.

Who can be married here?

The law has recently changed, and there are now a variety of ways that you may be eligible to celebrate your wedding at St Nicholas Church. The changes mean an engaged couple are welcome to be married in church in a parish if just one of the following applies:

  • One of them was baptised or prepared for confirmation in the parish;
  • one of them has ever lived in the parish for six months or more;
  • one of them has at any time regularly attended public worship in the parish for six months or more;
  • one of their parents has lived in the parish for six months or more in their child’s lifetime;
  • one of their parents has regularly attended public worship there for six months or more in their child’s lifetime;
  • their parents or grandparents were married in the parish.

(All of these refer to Church of England services)

If you live in the parish you are also entitled to get married in the parish church.

If either of you do not hold citizenship of an European Economic Area country, as well as the above qualifying connections you will need to apply for a Superintendent Registrar Certificate allowing your marriage to take place. We can explain the process for this to you – don’t let it put you off approaching the church.

Marriage Blessings

If your wedding has taken place in a Registery Office or abroad you may want to hold a separate service in church to ask for God’s blessing on your marriage. Perhaps you have been married for a number of years and want to give thanks for your relationship or maybe you’ve reached a significant milestone or been through some significant times together. Whatever the reason, we can arrange a service of blessing to suit you. Such services can be as formal or informal as you like – God is with us always.
